Bob Umbanhowar
Bob grew up in Southwestern Michigan and attended church in the town of Bangor. He and his family were very involved in the church: both grandfathers served as elders/deacons; an older brother is currently a church elder after serving nine years on the mission field in Thailand; a sister serves on the staff with her husband at Great Lakes Christian College; his deceased mother had a great love for children and his dad still serves the church in a limited capacity. Bob was baptized into Christ at the age of nine. He won a scholarship to attend Great Lakes Christian College but decided after one year that full-time ministry was not his calling. He met Kathie Starkey at a Michigan State University Campus House ministry and they were married on August 5, 1972. God led him into land surveying in 1974 where he has been ever since. They moved to Phoenix in 1984 and started their own business, Location Land Surveying. Bob started playing the mandolin at the same time his son Nathan was learning the guitar. Both served together on the Praise Team at their former church (Community Christian Church) in Cave Creek. His other Son Matt was also part of the Praise Team. Bob says “My heart is with Children’s Ministry. I think it is because you can truly be yourself around kids. They are so accepting and so brutal at the same time. I am also a firm believer that the vast majority of people who make a decision for Christ do it before the age of 16. That is where my efforts should be.” He has lead worship and worked in children’s ministry here at Cactus Christian Fellowship.
